In 1973 I set out with college degree in hand from
California State University, Chico (then called Chico State College)
to begin a career in graphic design and silk screen printing. Photography
was an adjunct to my design career and over the years I shot a lot
of film. It was something I liked to do, however the images went
into my archives. A few were lab printed, framed and hung, but most
languished away in the dark.
Silk
screen printing gave way within a half-a-dozen years to full-bore
graphic design which then dove into the world of computers in 1983.
Over the years, from that rudimentary beginning, I fully incorporated
digital technologies to run the business and as design and production
tools. The advancement of inkjet printing has now brought things
full circle for me — back into printing. Albeit, a very different
version, but printing none the less.
As I saw what others were doing with archival printing
and as the costs for the equipment came down, my interest was piqued.
So I bought a Nikon 8000 film scanner to capture what I had on film.
This brought my film archive out of the drawer. You have to be able
to print them, too, so the next step, after much consideration, was
a commitment to Epson’s Ultrachrome® printing technology.
From the technology came the execution of my ideas for
my art print series. It began with an idea of having a picture within
a picture. Some of the prints have a background image that retains
most of it's “picture-ness” and others were taken to
varying degrees of abstraction. There is no deep rationale as to
how each print was done other than what felt right at the time! I
tend to see my process as a kind of digital painting. But I also
very much enjoy photographs in a more traditional presentation, so
beginning with Collection 7, I present images from my body of work
as single images.
As displayed on this website, you can only see what
an image is, not it’s qualities as a print. For that you have
to see one in front of you. My studio is in beautiful downtown Chico,
so if you can get by give me a call. If you can’t get by, but
would like to purchase one of my prints, I offer a 30-day, money
back guarantee to help you overcome the fear of buying without seeing
it first. But I'm sure that when you see one you won't be disappointed! |
