As with so many things in life, there is a story
about how these prints came to be. They have been brought forth by me,
Charlie Osborn. My interest in Hawaiian images grew out of my genealogy
research on my maternal grandfather who was born and raised on the Keanae Peninsula on Maui in 1898
to a Hawaiian mother (Napihaa lineage) and a Norwegian father. This
curiosity was spurred on by photos in the family album of my
grandmother and her sister during their year or so stay in Honolulu
starting in December, 1923. It was during this time that my grandmother
(standing in first photo on right page above) and grandfather (second photo on right page above) met and
married.

My great aunt (under the blanket in left photo above) met, on the Matson Navigation Co.
ship S.S. Matsonia , S.S. Maui or S.S. Mariposa (shown above, but not sure which one this is) during the trip to Honolulu,
the ships purser (standing on the left in the right hand photo on the left page) who would
become her husband.
In this story, all the characters are long gone, but the images and the spirit behind them live on.
Of course, all of this has turned into an ongoing hunt for images
of Hawaii to expand the gallery. If you have actual photos or real photo postcards of Hawaii pre-1940 and would like to sell them, please email me with the particulars.
